My work at the AA developed a fascination with civic buildings, and an essay enquiry into monumentality and new public/civil space.
This project brief demanded a new 'landmark', building, to act as a catalyst for the re-population and regeneration of Dagenham Docks area in the Thames Gateway. The existing context is a defunct industrial landscape of 'temporary' shed buildings and waste plants. The proposal had to generate its own form and references.
The site is alongside the main A13 trunk road into london, the existing Dustrict Line tube, local railway lines, and also the extended Channel Tunnel rail link. The new building would be very visible to visitors and 'brand' the area.
